Are you yielded?

I am currently reading some of A.B. Simpson's work. This comes from "Himself",

Is your body yielded to Christ for Him thus to indwell and work through? Have you ever considered why He is called the Son of man? The title means that Jesus Christ is the one typical, comprehensive, universal, all-inclusive Man. Jesus is the one Man who contains in Himself all that man ought to be, all that man needs to have. All the fullness of the Godhead and the fullness of perfect manhood has been embodied in Christ, and He stands now as the summing up of all that man needs. His spirit is all that our spirits need. His body possesses all that our bodies need. He has a heart beating with the strength that our hearts need. He has organs and functions redundant with life not for Himself but for Humanity...

This is also good from "Christ our Savior",

Not all the preaching we have done or all the service we have rendered will amount to anything there. We must be identified with the Man who wore the thorns; we must be accepted in the Beloved, and then the Father will love us even as He loves His Son. We shall stand with Him even as Christ does.

Prayer- mysterious and intimate

Many books have been written and dedicated to prayer and there is much to be learned from prayer.

Prayer- being spiritual is hard to explain and reading many books on prayer has not made the journey any easier for me. What I have learned, is that from saints of earlier times relied on prayer and spent much time in prayer and in the Word of God.

Much can be written, discussed, and debated about prayer. I’m not going to try to expound to a degree of depth of any sorts on prayer. Much debate can be said about How, When, Where, Posture, and a big one, How long.

Why does God seem to answer some prayers and not others, can we change God’s mind by seeking and praying enough, do we pray once about something or keep asking?????

As I said, learning from and reading about past spiritual leaders of whom God used mightily, who seemed to have a unique and close relationship to God, has helped me more than reading “about” prayer.

Luther, Muller, and Tozer to name a few, relied heavily on prayer and also much time devoted to it. To say I don’t need it or rely on it seems to me a bit arrogant. Much can be learned from Godly men and women now gone, but living on in spirit and influence.

I desire to have a close fellowship with God, to really KNOW Christ, and commune with the Holy Spirit. To say that can be done by spending a few minutes a day in that communion, to me seems presumptuous. If you don’t agree, that’s fair, we each have to work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

I just know if I am going to pursue a human relationship, say with one of the opposite sex with intents for marriage. I don’t think that relationship would grow or become very deep by spending five minutes a day with that person, do you?

Another way to look at it. If you are a student in college or your specific job calls for study and further education. If you put little time into studying or research, what do you expect to get out of it?

You may say, that is different, I have to study for school or work. So why is it different? What is more important to you, your career or relationship with God?????

This is taken from a biography on A.W. Tozer titled, A Passion for God. One I have just finished reading. This is from pg. 121.

“Although the author never boasted about his devotional habits, those few who knew him well knew that the angular man with little formal schooling learned much about his Lord and his God in the secret place. Tozer spent incalculable hours in prayer. Most of his prolonged prayer time- with his Bible and hymnals as his only companions- took place in his church office on the back side of the second floor. He would carefully hang up his suit trousers and don his sweater and raggedy old “prayer pants” and sit for a while on his ancient office couch. After a time his spirit would drift into another realm. In time, he would abandon the couch, get on his knees, and eventually lie face down on the floor, singing praises to the Lion of the Tribe of Judah....

pg. 122.

Spiritually alert Christians said the the “bouquet of the Holy Spirit” was all over Tozer. Others used different rhetoric, saying that he had the “sacred anointing” or that is was evident “he had been with Jesus.” Tozer never denied that he spent many hours in prayer out of his increasingly demanding schedule. On the contrary, he maintained that anyone who wanted to know Christ better and love Him more must devote more time to closet prayer.”

pg. 146.

“That this modern prophet was genuinely humble, even if his methods could be acerbic can be seen in his dedication to prayer. Tozer took Jesus Christ seriously when He said, ‘whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.’ To guard against a ministry with works that appear successful yet are fruitless, Tozer did only what he knew could keep him in a place to abide- that is, he spent increasing time in the Scriptures and in prayer. As the years passed Tozer increased his daily time in Bible reading and prayer- at once meditating on the Scriptures, praising the One who inspired them, seeking God’s help in writing words with the power to transform souls, and applying truth to everyday life. E.M. Bounds once said that a preacher who prays little is prideful because he thinks he can minister out of his own strength. Conversely, if an awareness of the need to pray is evidence of at least a modicum of humility, Tozer certainly manifested it.”

Quote from C.S. Lewis as he sums up the drama of human history as one “in which the scene and general outline of the story is fixed by the author, but certain minor details are left for the actors to improvise. It may be a mystery why He should have allowed us to cause real events at all; but it is no odder that He should allow us to cause them by praying than by any other method.” Prayer is a designated instrument of God’s power, as real and as “natural” as any other power God may use.

To sum up I will leave you with this quote from one of Tozer’s best selling little books, called “The Knowledge of the Holy”

Chapter 1 pg. 1. “ What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

Tickets secured

Finally found some tickets at a decent price. I will be flying Air France Sept 16th-24th. I will be transferring in Paris.
I am currently reading a biography on A.W. Tozer called A Passion for God. I spent most of the day reading today, as I have come down with a little cold, so I rested and read all day. It was a beautiful day out so I spent a lot of the day reading on my back deck in the sun. I love these cool sunny fall like days. I really like fall, sweaters, warm cider, pumpkin donuts, cool weather.
So that's about all for now.

Love in Christ, R.B.

God's voice

I've been looking at John 10 and really trying to get a grasp on knowing and hearing God's voice.

John 10:3 "The doorkeeper opens the door for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought all his own sheep out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. 5 They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him, because they do not recognize the stranger’s voice."

I was listening to a message by James MacDonald the other day and he was talking about hearing God's voice over all the distractions in the world, and compared it to a symphony. I thought this was a good analogy. I wrote this down as I thought about that.

Like in a symphony, the drums can drowned out the sound of a flute.
So in life, the world can be like the drums, and drowned out God's voice.
His voice is more like the flute, delicate, beautiful, quiet.
Not like the big bass drums beating out strong sounds.
Don't let the drums of the world drowned out the voice of God;
He's trying to tell you something, listen...

Not to say this is always the way of God, because he doesn't always do everything the same for everyone. I don't claim to have ever actually heard the voice of God, but his promptings haven't been loud and obnoxious, instead soft and subtle.
With others He can be louder, more direct, and speak in obvious ways. That just hasn't been my experience so far. I don't put God in a box and hope for clear, direct, and even interfering ways, because I don't want to miss what He has planned for me.

I will continue to study John 10 about Jesus being our shepherd also. This has so much meaning for us, and this one sentence could be studied quite deeply.

John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."

Blessings, Roger

Getting excited

Time is getting closer for when I go back to Romania! The plan is to leave on Sept 16th as of now. I don't put anything in concrete because God can move things around. I'm excited to see the kids and all the new things that have been going on. There have been updates to the outside of the Isaiah center as well as inside. I'm really wanting to hear from God on whether He wants me to join FMN over in Romania, help at home as an advocate, or something totally different.
I want to give my life for something, to help others, to make a difference. Not that I feel I have to serve or work for God's approval. I don't think He will love me anymore if I do serve somewhere or if stay in a "regular" job.
I think the idea is the heart and our motives. I can reflect Jesus in my work anywhere and be an example for Him anywhere... at all times. Yeah that's hard. Everywhere, all the time.
It's out of a grateful heart of what He has done for me, and what I believe He has put on my heart. By praying for and asking for His will, I believe He gives us burdens and desires to do what He wants us to do.
I pray He gives me the wisdom to understand what that is and the spiritual ears to hear his voice.
You can view updates on the FMN website at www.fmnministries.org

Too radical for Christ?

It seems these days when people try to live out their faith as is laid out in the Bible and being totally committed to God, we are called radical or fanatics. Well I have heard of sports fanatics, and being fanatic or radical about things people love. So, if you want to call me a fanatic for God, then that's fine by me. I don't mean radical as being hateful, judgmental, unloving, or violent, actually the opposite. Christ calls us to radical love and the giving of ourselves. Let us "waste" our lives for God.
If people can scream and holler about a sports team or singer/performer, then why am I weird for wanting to shout praise to God, the creator of all?

One of the biggest reasons people are turned away from Christianity is because people don't live out what they claim they believe, I say Amen to that. That's why I believe it is so important that as true followers of Christ, we need to be totally committed to Him and live as He said to live. Different than culture, yes. He gave us the model, and it's not enough to excuse it off and say, well He was God.
We are to strive to live as Christ, for Him to be our example, not other humans!

The Bible says we have to live in the world but not to be apart of the world. If you call yourself a Christian then you should feel very fortunate that God rescued you and called you out from your old life. We don't seek Him on our own, Rom 3:11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
God has called us for a reason,
Eph 4:1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
2 Thes 2:14 To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Tim 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
2 Tim 1:9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus
1 Pt 2:21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
1 Jon 5:3-5 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

God just wants us to love, obey, and worship Him. For all that He has done for you (me), why is it so hard for us? Radical, fanatic ? Not really, just not what we are use to. Different than our culture and what the world sees as important and worthwhile, YES !!

Love and Blessings, Roger B.

Stronger than David?

First off, this is not for people who don't believe in God and are not following after Jesus.
This is for followers of Jesus, who want a relationship with Him and to live a life pleasing to God.

As the bride of Christ, His body (the church) God has called us apart to be different than culture, not apart of this world. In the world yes, but not apart of it. He wants us to be holy as He is holy, to live as Jesus did and be an example to others. Let us turn to the Bible for what is truth, even if it seems weird for our technology driven generation. Let's not be apathetic by all the blessings we receive. Let us live a life that gives back and blesses others. I need more of Jesus and less of me, my flesh is weak and I need to die to it moment by moment in all my choices. Do I want to live a life of momentary pleasures, lustful, selfish desires or live for God and strive to have the mind of Christ, even if it means giving up some of the luxuries in life? For me it's Christ, no question, to spend an eternity in His presence. This life is short, make it count for Him!
A lot of us feel we are not in need of much and therefore don't see our need for God. We all need God and are in need of a savior. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God.

As followers of Christ I don't understand how some can say that what they listen to or what they watch doesn't affect them. They say, I can handle it, it doesn't affect me, or I'm mature enough. So if you read your Bible and are familiar with the OT story of King David and his affair with Bathsheba. In 2 Sam 11:2 it says, "One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of his palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. Now this woman was very attractive." (net)
I notice that one, he SAW a woman bathing and two, that she was very attractive.
Now at this point he had a choice to make, does he continue with his lustful desires or go back inside and go to bed. Well, we know what choice he made and he didn't stop with lustful pleasures, but went on till he had Bathsheba's husband killed in battle. In this case this verse rings true,
James 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires. 15 Then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full grown, it gives birth to death.

We know that sin starts in the heart and then is shown by how we act. We all have weaknesses and we probably all know what ours are. James 3:2 says, We all stumble in many ways...
For many, and I would say for most, what we view and listen to affects our thoughts.
Phi 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things.
Rom 8:5

For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit.

Then David would write in the Psalms in 101:3,

I will not set before my eyes a thing of worthlessness.

Job would say in 31:1, “I made a covenant with my eyes;

how then could I entertain thoughts against a virgin?

Rom 12:2 states, Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God – what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

So are these all just words, or do we take seriously what is written in the Bible for us? We want God to be loving but not just or righteous, but to be loving he has to be those things also.
So are we honoring God with our time, money, what we watch, and listen to? Do we not care about watching mindless "entertainment", listening to vulgar or degrading music, and spending hours playing violent video games?
I'm not condemning anyone but I think the body of Christ (church) needs a wake up call in America.
I come to share my journey and what God has done and shown me. If this gets you to think or the spirit of God convicts you of some things, then you have a choice on whether you take action on those convictions. I come as someone who has wasted way to many hours watching tv and playing games, when I could have been spending time with my former wife, with God, or many other worthwhile activities.
If we are always "entertaining" ourselves, how can God speak to us? Have you had the desire for God to speak to you? The Lord would say in Ps.46:10 He says, “Stop your striving and recognize that I am God!
I think resting, waiting, being still, has taken on a negative idea in America. We are not to be slothful, but taking time to rest, relax, and wait on the Lord is important. Look up all the verses that talk about waiting on the Lord. In the rushing around in our busy lives it will be hard to hear from God and then harder to be used by Him. Have you ever asked God to be used by Him?
I have not had cable or dish for over 2 yrs now and I don't miss it. I am careful to what I listen to and I have been spending more time in the Bible. This is my journey, what's yours? Where are you headed?
I will sum up with a verse from,
Phil 3:12-14, Not that I have already attained this-that is, I have not already been perfected-but I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single minded: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Sorry if this seems too radical for you.......God loves you and is jealous for your devotion. You will have to talk to Him about what He wants from you.
Shalom, brother in Christ. R.B.

Romania

Last May '08, I went to Romania with a group from church and that trip has changed my life. We went to support Forget Me Not ministry and help out in the Tinca village. Much prayer went on when I was there about why God had me there, what He wanted from me, and has continued since I got back. My picture above with the kids on the bridge are those in the center, where they are learning about Jesus, being loved, and given hope. After much prayer and consideration, I turned in an application to be considered joining the ministry. I'm not sure what God has planned for me, but I am willing to do whatever He asks of me. I don't have anything holding me back from leaving. I would of course miss family, but I would be able to see them still, and hope they would want to come visit and see what's going on. God is so good and I know I can trust Him. He knows what's best for me, and where I can best be used and serve. To God be the Glory, let us raise up holy hands and praise Him, He alone is worthy of our praise, He is unparalleled, He is unprecedented, and most worthy of our Love.

Deut 6:4-5

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
KJV

I love what Brother Lawrence wrote, " O loving kindness so old and still so new, I have been too late of  loving Thee. You are young, my brethren; profit therefore I beseech you from my confession, that I cared too little to employ my early years for God. Consecrate all yours to His Love. If I had only known Him sooner, if I only had some one to tell me then what I am telling you, I should not have so long delayed in loving Him. Believe me, count as lost each day you have not used in loving God."
Amen.
Blessings, R.B.

Follower of Christ?

What does it mean to be a "Christian" or follower of Christ? What defines or what does that look like?
The title "Christian" has taken on a negative connotation over the centuries, because of people and groups using christendom in a negative way, or used it to push their own ideals or objectives. So clarity is sometimes needed as to what that title means. It is said from poles and information gathering, that around 85% of Americans consider themselves to be "Christian". This is usually a lump sum of all denominations including catholic. I find that hard to believe and with a certainty can say that it can't be true. If it were true, would the U.S. be to way it is?

I know one of the biggest complaints from people, of faith or not, is the hypocrisy in religion. That is why living out what we, (I) confess to believe is so important. People judge and watch us to see if our faith is real. We are called to be witnesses and that means we are literally living advertisements for Jesus.

Acts 1:8
.....and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
NKJV

People judge Jesus and His claims by the way we live. People are asking, is this thing for real or just another religion and a bunch of rules to follow? Is there lasting change, does it fulfill a need or longing desire?
We have a great responsibility if we are going to claim to be associated with Jesus.
I love this verse.
Acts 4:13-14

13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.
(NIV)

To be a believer or follower of Christ is not just accepting God's forgiveness, and going on to live our lives as we always have. There must be an inward change, and that change shows itself in the physical outward evidence in the way of "fruits of the spirit".

Rom 12:2
2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.
(NIV)
Gal 5:22-25
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
(NIV)

The next biggest sign is Love. So much is talked about love in the NT.
John 13:35
By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
John 14:15
5 "If you love me, you will obey what I command
Rom 13:9-10
..and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself."   10 Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law
Gal 5:14
14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."
2 John 6
6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
(from New International Version)

At last, I leave you with this,

Eph 4:1-6 (NET)

I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called,2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you too were called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Acts 5:38-42 (NET)

38 So in this case I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, because if this plan or this undertaking originates with people, it will come to nothing, 39 but if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them, or you may even be found fighting against God.” He convinced them, 40 and they summoned the apostles and had them beaten. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them. 41 So they left the council rejoicing because they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name. 42 And every day both in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus was the Christ.

With love, R.B.

Why I do what I do

Why do I want to serve, what compels me? Do I feel I have to serve God? Do I do it to try to earn something with God?

Robert S. McGee writes:

What a waste to attempt to change behavior without truly understanding the driving needs that cause such behavior! Yet millions of people spend a lifetime searching for love, acceptance, and success without understanding the need that compels them. We must understand that this hunger for self-worth is God-given and can only be satisfied by Him. Our value is not dependent on our ability to earn the fickle acceptance of people, but rather, its true source is the love and acceptance of God. He created us. He alone knows how to fulfill all of our needs.

All believers have the perfect basis for a proper sense of identity or a good self-concept, one dependent on who they are in Christ and, please note, one dependent on the value God places on their lives rather than on the value they or others may place on their lives. Whose opinion is the most important? Yours and mine, or God’s? Do we properly grasp how foolish it is to live our lives for the opinions of man?

—ABCs for Christian Growth

14 For the love of Christ controls us, (or compels us) since we have concluded this, that Christ died for all; therefore all have died. 15 And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised. 16 So then from now on we acknowledge no one from an outward human point of view. Even though we have known Christ from such a human point of view, now we do not know him in that way any longer. 17 So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away — look, what is new has come!18 And all these things are from God who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and who has given us the ministry of reconciliation. 19 In other words, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people’s trespasses against them, and he has given us the message of reconciliation.

2 Cor 5:14-19 (NET1)

I know that I am saved by grace by faith and not by my works,

For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 it is not from works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them.

Eph 2:8-10 (NET1)

Because of God's love for me and praying for His burdens to become my burdens, I want to serve and help others. We are to love one another, this is the greatest commandment. We can do all things but if we don't have love, it's worth nothing.

If I give away everything I own, and if I give over my body in order to boast, but do not have love, I receive no benefit.

1 Cor 13:3 (NET1)

And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love

1 Cor 13:13 (NET1)

So love is the driving force behind what I do. Love for others, love for God number 1, and to share His love with others. To share the hope that I have in Christ that they also may have the assurance of eternal rest with Him. God is light and in Him is no darkness at all, may we, may I be the light that shines in the darkness. Light dispels darkness and brings about hope and new beginnings. May God be that new beginning, for in Him all things begin and end. Without Him, what hope do we have? I leave that with you.

Time of seeking and waiting

It may see odd to the culture to say, I am actively waiting, but that is what God wants us to do. By waiting on the Lord, I am not sitting with my hands folded doing nothing. I am pursuing Him by reading His word, reading Christian books that help me focus on Him. I am in prayer and looking for open doors. As hard as it is sometimes, I am trying to be sensitive to the Spirit and the leading or promptings I get.
To say it's always easy would not be true, but God is faithful and trustworthy to fulfill His promises.
Jer 29:11 For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord. ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you a future filled with hope.

Our hope needs to be in the Lord and not in people. No matter who that person is, they will let you down. They are human and it's just a fact they will fail you. God is not like man,

Isa 55:6 Seek the Lord while he makes himself available; call to him while he is nearby!
55:7 The wicked need to abandon their lifestyle and sinful people their plans.
They should return to the Lord, and he will show mercy to them, and to their God, for he will freely forgive them. 55:8 “Indeed, my plans are not like your plans, and my deeds are not like your deeds, 55:9 for just as the sky is higher than the earth, so my deeds are superior to your deeds and my plans superior to your plans.

I want to follow His ways and His path, because I don't know best and He does. I don't trust myself to know the best way. In Prov 3:5-6 it says,

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

Psalms 25:4-5
4 Make me understand your ways, O Lord!
Teach me your paths!
5 Guide me into your truth and teach me.
For you are the God who delivers me;
on you I rely all day long.

I feel like God is leading me towards pursuing missions. I am open to whatever it is He wants me to do. I am taking a missions class right now called "Perspectives". It is a great class and I am learning much. I have turned in an application for a few different ministries, and waiting to see what doors open. I am ready to walk through, but I think God has me waiting and preparing me for what He has. No matter what, I am trusting in Him. That's all for now.
